Lesson Plan 1: Type Zero and Type One Conditionals

Lesson Plan in Grade 11 - English

Date: September 10, 2019

Time: 6:30 am to 8:00 am

Class: Grade 11 – IPS 2


I. Learning Objectives

At the end of the class discussion and group dynamics, the learners are expected to:

a. complete the conditional statements through a gap-filling activity and picture analysis,

b. value the importance of understanding conditionals in making future plans by sharing their personal insights; and

c. read a sample dialogue about future plans using conditionals with correct pronunciation.

III. Learning Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Greetings

2. Classroom Management

· The teacher will ask the students to pick up pieces of litters, arrange their chairs and settle down.

3. Checking of Attendance

· The teacher will check students who are not present or late in class.

4. Brief Introduction and Setting of Class Rules

· The teacher will introduce himself and set the following class rules: (3 R’s)

  • Respect your classmates and your teachers

  • Raise your hand if you have a question or clarification

  • Reinforce EOP (English Only Please)

5. Review

· The students shall answer the following guide questions:

  • What is the meaning of conditional?

  • What is the difference between Zero and First Conditional?

6. Posting the Learning Objectives

· The teacher will post/write today’s agenda on the board:

  • DISCUSSION: Gap-filling Exercise with Pictures

  • PRACTICE: Writing a Dialogue (Group work)

  • ACTIVITY: Role-Playing Activity (Group work)


B. Developmental Activities

Motivation

1. The teacher will show a sample dialogue that uses conditionals to the class:

SAMPLE DIALOGUE

Maggie : I don't feel well today.

Vince : If you feel sick, go to the doctor!

Maggie : I don't want to go to the doctor. If I go to the doctor, I will have to pay a lot of

money!

Vince : If you don't go to the doctor, you will be more sick!

Maggie : I know. I don't like feeling this way. If I don't go to the doctor, I will rest at

home.

Vince : If I come to pick you up, will you let me drive you to the doctor?

Maggie : That's very nice of you, thank you.


2. The students, guided by the teacher, will be asked to read the selection. They will also identify the conditional sentences given in the dialogue and determine the type used.

3. The teacher will process students’ answers and relate the activity to the topic.


Presentation

1. The teacher will introduce and discuss the lesson on Conditionals through a Powerpoint slide presentation.

2. The students will be asked to identify the two main clauses found in each sentence:

· if-clause = the conditional statement

· main clause = the consequence

3. The teacher shall discuss the tenses of verbs used in each clause.

Application (Practice Exercise)

1. The students shall work in groups of 5-6. They will conduct an activity called “Conditional Chain.”

2. The teacher shall post questions on the board and each student (one student followed by another) in a group should be able to give an answer using conditionals. The questions are as follows:

· Round 1: What will you do if you finish college?

· Round 2: What will you do if you win the lottery?

· Round 3: What will you do to relax after class?

· Round 4: What will you do if you have some free time on Saturday?

· Round 5: What will you do if you didn’t get your dream job?

· Round 6: What will you do if you catch a cold this week?

3. Each student should answer based on their assigned question. There should be no repeating of answers.

4. The teacher will use a “knockout elimination” process. The last group that will remain wins and will get additional 3 points for their final activity.

5. The teacher will process the students’ responses.

Valuing and Generalization

1. The students will be asked to provide the benefits of learning conditionals in expressing their future plans and in daily English communication.

2. The students shall enumerate the forms for zero and first conditionals.


IV. Evaluation

1. The students will work in groups of four. They will be given 4 cardboards and chalks to write their answers. They will gain one point each for every valid answer. (5 items, 10 points)

2. The teacher will post pictures on the board through a PowerPoint Slide Presentation. For example:

3. The students shall fill in the gaps/blanks to complete the statements that relate to the given picture.

4. The group having the highest score will have 20 points. The rest will have 18, 16 and 14 points respectively according to their number of points.

5. The teacher will check and verify the students’ answers.
